California Community College Championships

The titles were spread out among schools at the 2008 California Community College Championships, held this past week in Long Beach, California.

As the only state with its own junior college conference, California is loaded with tennis talent and it was showcased at the El Dorado Tennis Center for the annual Championships.  In the men's team event, the Ventura Pirates had a fitting end to the school's first undefeated season as they took out Fresno City College, 5-2 for their another trophy (they last won in 2004). The Grossmont women also were winners for the first time since '04, taking their 11th overall when they defeated Chabot College, 5-3.

In the men's individual events, freshman Daniel Coehlo became the first player from Riverside College to win a state championship when he defeated Hassan Abbas of Ventura, 6-2,6-2. Hassan did prevail in the doubles, however, as he and partner James Preston took the win over Doug Edwards & Jason Wall of Cerritos College.

Unranked Lorena Zago of the College of the Desert won the women's singles with a 6-3,7-6 decision over Vanessa Reinstein of Grossmont. Orange Coast's Brittany Bass & Brittnie Furuvald were the doubles champions after defeating Caroline Houston & Patricia Vatelia of Riverside Community College.

The rest of the community and junior colleges in the United States are currently playing off at the NJCAA Championships.
