Quotes of the Day
"I schedule my life around my life, not his life."
– Roger Federer, lightheartedly explaining why he hasn't seen either of Rafael Nadal's US Open matches this year
"I was expecting five sets. I was there for four and five, but he wasn't there anymore, so that was that was problem."
– Federer, coming up with another explanation for why he missed Nadal's previous match, which ended in three sets.
"Who likes drama? Do you know anybody that likes to get involved into tight matches where you're maybe going to go into a third set or whatever?"
– Jelena Jankovic, denying that a small part of her enjoys having eventful matches
"It's getting so much messed up, so I don't get anything who's going to be No. 1."
– Svetlana Kuznetsova, on the flux surrounding the No. 1 ranking on the women's tour
"I've heard that this has been the main subject in the papers, and I've heard that even they showed it on the TV two days ago when I played my first match, so I'm denying this, and I'm saying that we don't have a romance like people call it already. I even heard that she's here, so it's kind of strange, because I would be the first to know, probably."
– Novak Djokvic, disputing rumors of a romance with Paraguayan javelin thrower Leryn Franco
Friday's Results of Note
Andy Roddick (USA) [8] def. Ernests Gulbis (LAT) 3-6, 7-5, 6-2, 7-5
As Gulbis observed, winning the second set after being a break up could have changed the whole match. But Roddick kept fighting while Gulbis, after losing the second set, turned in a flat third set and never quite got the inspiration back after that.
Tommy Robredo (ESP) [15] def. Marat Safin (RUS) 4-6, 7-6(4), 6-4, 6-0
Another match decided by the second set --Safin went into slow destruction mode in the third and full-scale meltdown in the fourth.
Jo-Wilfried Tsonga (FRA) [19] def. Carlos Moya (ESP) 4-6, 6-3, 6-4, 6-4
At 3-2, 40-40, in the fourth set, Tsonga ran too fast towards the net chasing a dropshot. He jumped over the net, kept running, and high fived Moya at the baseline. Oh, and he ended up winning the match too. Color the charismatci Frenchman dangerous from now on.
Marin Cilic (CRO) [30] def. Robby Ginepri (USA) 6-4, 2-6, 6-2, 7-5
A disappointing result for former US Open semifinalist Ginepri, who was up a break in the fourth set and whose game is well suited to this locale. But a nice win for last week's New Haven champ Cilic. He'll now aim to make the second week of a Slam for the third time this year, but it won't be easy -- he faces Novak Djokovic next.
Novak Djokovic (SRB) [3] def. Robert Kendrick (USA) 7-6(3) 6-4, 6-3
Kendrick's attacking game gave Djokovic an early scare -- the American had set points in the tiebreak -- but Djokovic was in command once he captured the first set.
Gilles Muller (LUX) def. Tommy Haas (GER) 2-6, 2-6, 7-6(5), 6-3, 6-3
Now here's a blast from the past -- Muller produced one of the most famous upsets in recent US Open history when he upset Andy Roddick in the first round in 2005, but has rarely been heard from since. Still, this is a positive step forward. Haas lost his concentration after a disputed call in the third-set tiebreak and let Muller right back in the match.
Katarina Srebotnik (SLO) [28] def. Svetlana Kuznetsova (RUS) [3]
The second big upset for Srebotnik in a Slam this year -- she defeated Serena Williams at the French Open. Kuznetsova has looked distinctly lackluster this year, and even she admits she's struggling to find intensity.
Jelena Jankovic (SRB) [2] def. Jie Zheng (CHN) 7-5, 7-5
Janovic says she'd like to have easier matches, but things rarely work out that way for the lively Serb. Even this straight-set win contained its share of drama, with a see-saw second set that ended with an 11-deuce game. Having navigated one potentially dangerous match, Jankovic now faces another -- red-hot teen Caroline Wozniacki, who has won 14 of her last 15 matches.
Caroline Wozniacki (DEN) [21] def. Victoria Azarenka (BLR) [14] 6-4, 6-4
Both these rising teens have been having a good summer, but Wozniacki stayed steadier and came through.
Saturday's Matches to Watch
Practically every match on the show courts is an interesting one, including a couple not listed here...
Rafael Nadal (ESP) [1] vs. Viktor Troicki (SRB) Arthur Ashe Stadium - 2nd match
Nadal has been basically unstoppable of late, as everyone has seen, but there could be some good moments in this match. Every Serb is dangerous these days, it seems, and Troicki can be impressive.
Serena Williams (USA) [4] vs. Ai Sugiyama (JPN) [30] Arthur Ashe Stadium - 3rd match
Serena has too much firepower, but the 32-year-old Sugiyama will still be game for this match.
Dinara Safina (RUS) [6] vs. Timea Bazsinszky (SUI) Arthur Ashe Stadium - 7:00 pm
The Swiss teen is talented, but is she ready to challenge the red-hot Safina?
James Blake (USA) [9] vs. Mardy Fish (USA) Arthur Ashe Stadium - 2nd evening match
When Fish gets married at the end of September, Blake will be a groomsman, but they'll try to put friendship aside for this night match. Blake has won two of their three career meetings, so Fish will be looking to move forward off Blake's backhand and not get involved in a running contest against his speedy opponent.
Sam Querry (USA) vs. Ivo Karlovic (CRO) [14] Louis Armstrong Stadium - 11:00 am
Don't forget to look at the ace stats afterwards as the 6'6" American goes up against the 6'10" Croat.
Julie Coin (FRA) vs. Amelie Mauresmo (FRA) [32] Louis Armstrong Stadium - 2nd match
These two come from the same region of France, though they don't know each other that well. It'll be interesting to see if Coin can show the same form she did in knocking out a patchy Ivanovic. Either way, however, it's a nice opportunity for Mauresmo to show she's still capable of making the second week of a Slam.
Gael Monfils (FRA) vs. David Nalbandian (ARG) [7] Louis Armstrong Stadium - 3rd match
The only thing these two have in common is that they're completely unpredictable. Monfils' flamboyance and Nalbandian's stealth should make for a nice contrast in this match.
Juan Martin del Potro (ARG) [17] vs. Gilles Simon (FRA) [16] Grandstand - 3rd match
Two of the surprise stars of this summer.
