MSRP: $85
Release Date: January 1, 2013

Facts: New for 2013, the GEL-Solution Slam features the high-abrasion rubber outsole installed in Asics’ flagship tennis shoe, the GEL-Resolution 5, along with its popular GEL-Solution Speed shoe. The combination of the outsole and Asics’ forefoot GEL cushioning system is designed to provide both gripping traction and comfortable shock absorption. A synthetic leather upper is flexible and contributes to the shoe’s light weight.

A size 9 men’s shoe weighs 11.4 oz, according to Asics—the size 11 ½ men’s sample we tested weighed in at 12 oz.—while the women’s size 7 sample weighed in at a feather-light 8.8 oz. The men’s shoe, which comes in black, lightning, and royal blue (with the Asics logo in yellow on the back of the heel), is available in sizes 6-13 and 14. Asics offers the pink and black women’s shoe in sizes 5-12.

Impressions: This is a sleek and ultra-light shoe incorporating several of the Asics’ popular technologies at a lower price. While the GEL-Solution Slam doesn’t offer the rear foot GEL cushioning system found in both the fully-loaded GEL-Resolution 5 and the GEL-Solution Speed (nor does it come with the six-month outsole warranty of Asics’ flagship shoe), it won’t lighten your wallet substantially either. The GEL-Solution Slam costs $55 less than the Resolution 5 and $45 less than the Solution Speed, while incorporating some of the same attributes. If you’re looking for a light-weight performance shoe built low to the ground at a value price, then GEL-Solution Slam may be the ideal fit.
