With a model wife and a burgeoning radio and television career, Andy Roddick is undoubtedly content in his decision to retire from professional tennis. But if there was ever a moment that had him wanting to pull a Clijsters this season, it had to be this wacky Wimbledon. 14 of the men’s top 20, including Federer and Nadal, didn’t make it out of the first week. True, the top two seeds, Djokovic and Murray, still stand in the way. But Roddick, a three-time finalist, must have wondered what he could have done with such a wide open draw. No matter, as what if always takes a backseat to what is.
And for Roddick that’s a new partnership with apparel company TravisMathew. From this viewer’s perspective it always seemed odd that the top American player was clad in Lacoste. But tennis is indeed a global game, and that endorsement arrangement has run its course. Now Roddick joins TM—a southern California-based outfit that made its reputation in the golf world—as investor and brand ambassador. The label has been expanding into lifestyle wear and accessories and sees aligning with Roddick as a further step in that direction.
Roddick joins buddy, James Blake, who has been representing TM since June 2012. The company has just launched its TMCA Collection, which features athletic apparel intended to be worn in and out of competition. It’s made of a two-layered cotton/polyester fabric that’s designed to meet performance needs, with comfort and styles that suit an athlete’s everyday life. Take a look at Roddick modeling a few of the pieces in the video below. Check out the t-shirt on the girl at the 0:27 mark: “Golf Sucks”? An odd choice given the company’s reputation, but a sentiment that’s probably seconded by many Roddick fans.
