Gear Review

The Novak Djokovic-endorsed frame comes in both an 18 x 20 (Djokovic’s weapon of choice) and a 16 x 19 string pattern. Spinmasters preferred the more open 16 x 19 string pattern while harder hitters gravitated toward the 18 x 20 pattern.  The IG Speed Series has a stiffer feel than some of Head’s other advanced player frames. The frame incorporates Innegra, a tough, light, high-performance fiber installed primarily in the hoop that Head says increases stability and decreases shock. This is a precision stick that serve-and-volleyers and baseliners with full, fast swings found satisfying. Excellent stability, laser-like control and quality comfort level that made vibration dampeners unnecessary. The 16 x 19 string pattern worked best in the hands of players who can put rotation on the ball; the tighter 18 x 20 string pattern promoted precision. Advanced all-courters valued the versatility of the racquet. Players who don’t consistently generate racquet head speed won’t get the most out of the racquet. The 18 x 20 version did not offer as much added spin value as the 16 x 19 version.

Bottom Line: A successful step forward for the YouTek IG Speed Series, precision is a primary asset of this racquet. Players with long, full swings will thrive in baseline duels and attacking players will benefit from the crisp feel at net. This racquet offers quality from all over the court. A cautionary note: If you don’t have an advanced game don’t pick up this frame. For players who aren’t quite strong enough to handle its heft, the lighter YouTek IG Speed 300, Speed Elite and Speed Lite offer a variety of options.
