| Hey folks. I hate to ask this one, as it has has been discussed (I am sure) to a huge extent, but I get a little baffled here with all of the choice that is out there:
Style of play: aggressive baseliner (4.0-4.5)
Age: 40
Raquet: Wilson K-Surge with with a little lead tape
Current strings: Lux Big Banger Alu Rough with NXT (54x58 for tension)
I have played this set-up for about 3 years, and quit elike it, but have started to get a tinge of elbow pain. From what I have read, it seems that I should consider gut string for comfort, but I do like the spin generation of the Alu Rough.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers,
Rol

| Try Wilson Sensation in the cross strings first . . . if that doesn't work then try gut. If your still getting a sore arm after that then stop using the Lux Big Banger. The elbow (and maybe in the near future the shoulder) pain is not worth the little extra spin!

| Rolman,
if you are suffering from arm pain it is true that you should be looking to soften the stringbed slightly. One option would be to put in a softer cross string, however, NXT is one of the softer multifilaments on the market anyway. It would therefore be worth considering changing your main strings instead.
You could replace the mains with a thinner polyester string such as Luxilon Ace Gold (1.12mm), Luxilon Timo (1.10mm or 1.17mm), or Tecnifibre Pro Black Code (1.18mm). The Pro Black Code may be of more interest as it has a pentagonal cross section and will produce the sort of spin you are used to with Alu Power Rough.
Your other option is to consider one of the newer polyesters on the market which have a softer feel. These include Luxilon M2 Pro (1.25), MSV Hex (Hexagonal cross section) and Pro Supex Blue Gear (cog shaped cross section) which are becoming very popular in the UK as they perform like expensive (Luxilon type strings) whilst being about half the cost.
Hope it helps

| Wow! Thanks so much for the excellent answers, folks. Sure is a great community to get assistance like this.
You mentioned Luxilon M2 Pro (1.25), MSV Hex (Hexagonal cross section) and Pro Supex Blue Gear (cog shaped cross section).
1) Would you string both mains and crosses with this, or juston the mains.
2) Would bringing the tension down help at all? I am 54 lbs on the mains, 58 on the cross right now...my pro-suggested maybe a 2 pound drop across the whole racquet...

| Rol,
as you are looking to soften up the feel of your racquet whilst maintaining the spin benefits of a textured polyester, you should only use those strings for the mains. If you used them for the entire racquet, it would play stiffer than what you currently have.
Luxilon Alu Power is a polyester string, so if you kept the tension the same you should expect the strings to be slightly more responsive and easy on your arm than what you have at the moment. However, it is certainly an option to reduce your string tension by a couple of pounds too, which in combination with softer strings should improve things for you.
For the crosses, I would suggest a good multifilament such as the top end Wilson strings as you are currently using. If you are looking for a cheaper option, Pro Supex Maxim is a good multifilament, equivalent to Wilson Sensation and about half the price.
Hope it helps
