72 Hours in Mylan WTT: July 15
YESTERDAY (July 14)
Austin Aces d. Boston Lobsters 22-18
After losing three straight matches, the Austin Aces fended off the upset minded Boston Lobsters despite the Lobsters late comeback. This was a key win for the Aces, as they fell from second to fourth in the Western Conference during their three game skid. Despite their loss, the Lobsters should be more dangerous as the season’s moves on with Sharon Fichman returning to the lineup for singles competition.\
San Diego Aviators d. Washington Kastles 22-18
In their first meeting ever, the San Diego Aviators stunned the Washington Kastles, handing them their first loss since last season and snapping the Kastles winning streak at 18. Aviators Daniela Hantuchova was a key contributor to the match, winning in women’s doubles and singles. Hantuchova handed Martina Hingis her first loss of the season in women’s singles 5-2 to take a 17-14 lead after halftime. The Kastles would storm back and tie the match at 18-18 in the last set of the match, but the Aviators reeled off three straight games to finish off their historic win.
With the upset, the Aviators moved atop the Western Conference rankings ahead of the Texas Wild by one game. The Kastles still have a comfortable 3.5 game lead in the Eastern Conference over the Philadelphia Freedoms and Boston Lobsters.
TODAY (July 15)
Live Stream of the Day – San Diego Aviators @ Philadelphia Freedoms 7:00 PM EDT
Making her Mylan World TeamTennis debut this season, two-time Grand Slam singles champion Victoria Azarenka will headline the lineup for the Philadelphia Freedoms in their home opener of the season. This will be Azarenka’s first time playing Mylan WTT since 2010, when she played for the Washington Kastles. The dangerous San Diego Aviators will be the visitors, coming off the upset against the Washington Kastles last night. Azarenka will be a key addition for the Freedoms in singles and doubles, so expect her to be a key player in tonight’s matchup.
Austin Aces @ Boston Lobsters 7:00 PM EDT
The Austin Aces and Boston Lobsters will face off again for the second day in a row. This time, the Lobsters will be the hosts. Without marquee players Andy Roddick or Marion Bartoli by their side, the Aces could face struggles in the men’s singles and women’s doubles positions. The Lobsters will have a chance to get revenge on the Aces and earn their first win of the season. Lobsters player Sharon Fichman hopes to get her revenge also, as she will go up against Vera Zvonareva again and hopefully pick up her first singles win of the season. John Patrick Smith will fill in for Roddick in tonight’s lineup, as he will likely play a singles matchup against the Lobsters Rik de Voest.
Springfield Lasers @ Texas Wild – 8:30 PM EDT
In their third matchup this season, the streaking Springfield Lasers will look for their fourth straight win after starting the season 0-3. With the head-to-head series tied at 1-1 this season, the stakes have become more crucial later this season. With a win by the Lasers, they will jump ahead of the Wild to put themselves in second place in the Western Conference.
TOMORROW (July 16)
Texas Wild @ Washington Kastles 7:00 PM EDT
The Washington Kastles will play their first match back since losing to the San Diego Aviators on Monday. Expect the Kastles to come out hungry, as seven-time Grand Slam singles champion Venus Williams makes her return to Mylan World TeamTennis for the first time since clinching the title for the Kastles during the 2012 season. Martina Hingis will also be in action again, so don’t be surprised to see a potential Williams/Hingis doubles to bring in more excitement in the matchup.
Springfield Lasers @ Philadelphia Freedoms 7:00 PM EDT
The Springfield Lasers and Philadelphia Freedoms will face off for the first time since opening day, where the Freedoms edged the Lasers 21-20 in a Supertiebreaker. A similar lineup will come in this matchup, so expect a close match between these two teams.
San Diego Aviators at Boston Lobsters 7:00 PM EDT
The San Diego Aviators and Boston Lobsters will face off for the second time this season, where the Aviators edged the Lobsters 21-19 in overtime. Aviators star Daniela Hantuchova and Somdev Devvarman will be key to their success in this matchup. For the Lobsters, Sharon Fichman and Rik de Voest have to step up in the singles competition to make this rematch close again.
