The French Open on TENNIS.com

See what’s expected in Paris with these men’s and women’s previews, and see who the consensus favorites are with our poll of editors’ picks. As Roger Federer goes for a career Slam, we've also taken a look at his odds of success – literally. American men have traditionally struggled on the red clay of Paris and the number of American women at the top of the game has dwindled in recent years, so we take a look at how U.S. players were expected to fare. The men didn't meet their (low) expectations, all nine going out in the first round. On the womens' side, Serena Williams is the only American women left standing.

TV viewers have the potential for near wall-to-wall coverage of the event this year, with the Tennis Channel, ESPN and NBC all taking turns to provide broadcasts from the grounds of Roland Garros. Don’t lose track of what’s on when – keep the TV schedule handy as you plan your channel-surfing.

The cast is always a little different at the French Open because of the red clay – we've put up an alternative seedings list to work out who’ll get an advantage on the surface and who might be hampered.

During the day, follow matches as they happen with our live scores and get reports of the all the action on the homepage. On the blogging front, Kamakshi Tandon’s Travelblogue is on site at Paris during the first week, with Peter Bodo providing his unique and insightful perspective at TennisWorld during the second week. Meanwhile, Steve Tignor will hold down the fort at home with regular entries at The Wrap.

Finally, feast your eyes on the best pictures from the event at TENNIS.com's weekly photo gallery. If you can’t wait, the site's central photo gallery has the latest shots almost as quickly as they're snapped.

Bonne journée!

French Open Update

As week one of the French Open comes to a close, most of the big names are still standing but the Americans are not. Jelena Jankovic knocked out Venus Williams in the first big-time matchup of the women’s draw, leaving Venus’ sister Serena as the last American still alive in the singles draws.

The nine U.S. men entered all lost in the first round, the country’s worst Grand Slam showing in the open era. Other shocks on the men’s side include the early exit of fifth seed Fernando Gonzalez in the first round, and French hope Richard Gasquet in the second round. But Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal, towering above the rest of the field, have been quickly and calmly making their way through the early rounds.

It’s been even smoother sailing on the women’s side, where Serena is on course for a quarterfinal showdown with defending champion Justine Henin. That matchup could decide who wins the title, though Jankovic will also be hoping to have a say in that stacked top half of the women’s draw. In the weaker bottom half, Maria Sharapova and Amelie Mauresmo are trying to shake off the rust and last year’s finalist Svetlana Kuznetsova is also still alive.
