The Summer of Tennis

The clay season is heading for its climax with the French Open men's and women's finals this weekend, which means the grass can't be far behind.

With the American men all having lost early in Paris, some are getting a headstart on the green stuff by playing a challenger in the English town of Surbiton. Their luck hasn't changed so far -- Andy Roddick and Robby Ginepri fell in the first round of doubles while Sam Querrey lost his opening singles match -- but the U.S. is still expected to put up a much stronger showing on the lawns of Wimbledon than the red clay of Roland Garros.

Two-time finalist Roddick is one of the favorites behind Roger Federer, and James Blake will be an outside contender despite having never been past the third round in SW19. Rising teenager Sam Querrey's big-serving game is built for grass, and he'll be looking to make a successful first appearance at the All England Club.

But the dominant question for yet another year will be -- can anyone stop Federer? The Swiss world No. 1 has taken the event for the past four years and will be gunning for a record-tying fifth win in a row this time around. If he needs any extra incentive, five-time champ Bjorn Borg has promised to show up to watch Federer try to equal his record.

Rafael Nadal, who last year performed the rare double feat of winning the French Open and going all the way to the final at Wimbledon, will try to repeat his success on the grass with his improved serve and more aggressive mentality.

On the women's side, perennnial favorites like Serena Williams, Justine Henin and Maria Sharapova will go up against the new guard of rising players who made their mark in Paris -- Jelena Jankovic, Ana Ivanovic, Nicole Vaidisova, Anna Chavetadze and Lucie Safarova.

Last year's champ Amelie Mauresmo will also be back to defend her crown after yet another disappointment in front of her home crowds in Paris, and former champs Venus Williams and Martina Hingis will try to reclaim old glories.
