The Chase is On

The race to tennis’ year-ending championships is nearing an end and the men’s side may be decided in a photo finish.

Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal Novak Djokovic, Nikolay Davydenko and Andy Roddick have officially clinched their spots for the eight-player Masters Cup. David Ferrer and Fernando Gonzalez are strong contenders for the next two spots.

That leaves the eighth and final spot the only open one – but it’s wide open, with Tommy Haas, Tommy Robredo, James Blake, Richard Gasquet, Tomas Berdych, Carlos Moya and Ivan Ljubicic all in the running. Several other players also have a small chance of qualifying for Shanghai, but they'll have to sweep the field over the next two weeks to do it.

The players at the top don’t have to worry about being in Shanghai, but they are jostling for a place at the summit. The Masters event Paris and the Masters Cup in Shanghai will be crucial in deciding the year-end No. 1, No. 2 and No. 3 rankings between Federer, Nadal and Djokovic.

On the women’s side, things have been settled. Serena Williams has been declared the fifth qualifier for the eight-player event, and Anna Chakvetadze, Venus Williams and Maria Sharapova will be the final three based on the players’ expected schedules. They join Justine Henin, Jelena Jankovic, Svetlana Kuznetsova and Ana Ivanovic in the eight-player field.

There’s also no question about who will end the year as the WTA No. 1 –Henin officially clinched that spot earlier this month.
