Marat Safin Bio and Stats

The tall, sculpted Russian was a showman and one of the game’s greatest talents. And boy, could he break a racquet. Marat Safin shocked the tennis world when he defeated Pete Sampras in the 2000 U.S. Open final. Though he won just one more major title at the 2005 Australian Open, he did it in thrilling fashion, beating Roger Federer in five sets in the semifinals and then former No. 1 (and Australian native) Lleyton Hewitt in the final. Safin didn’t just punish serves, backhands and forehands in his day. He delivered some of the funniest lines in the sport and made headlines for the women he dated, the vodka he drank and the detours he took, such as an aborted climbing trip in the Himalayas. He played his final match against Juan Martin Del Potro in Paris in the fall of 2009. (as of November 17, 2009)
