In 2008, Smyczek qualified for his first ATP World Tour main draw in San Jose after winning eight qualifying matches, but then lost to Mardy Fish in the first round. In 2013, after he achieved a personal Grand Slam-best of making it to the third round of the US Open after beating Duckworth and Bogomolov Jr., the No. 3 American (behind Isner and Querrey) finished in the top 100 for the first time. He also reached his first ATP final in doubles in Newport. In 2014, his best showing was reaching the third round in Washington after defeating Kuznetsov and No. 38 Chardy who was his highest-ranked win of the year. In 2015, he lost in the first round at the Australian open in five sets to Nadal.
