Arguably the best active women’s player without a Grand Slam title, Elena Dementieva has made two Slam finals and six other semifinals in her career. In 2004 she lost to compatriots Anastasia Myskina and Svetlana Kuznetsova in the finals of the French Open and the U.S. Open, respectively. She has made the semifinals of the U.S. Open three other times (2000, 2005, 2008) and been a semifinalist at the Australian Open once (2009) and at Wimbledon twice (2008, 2009). In the 2009 Wimbledon semifinals, considered the finest match of the ladies’ tournament that year, Dementieva had a match point against eventual champion Serena Williams before falling. (The match was the longest women’s Wimbledon semifinal in the Open Era.) At the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, Dementieva defeated compatriot Dinara Safina in the gold-medal final to win the singles title. Dementieva’s serve, once the glaring liability of her game, has gotten much more consistent in recent years. That improvement in part allowed her to reach a career-high ranking of No. 3 on April 6, 2009 (she finished the season ranked No. 5). Dementieva won three singles titles in 2009 to bring her career total to 14. In the past she has been romantically linked to fellow Russian pro athlete Maxim Afinogenov, an NHL forward who currently plays for the Atlanta Thrashers. A native of Moscow, Dementieva is coached by her mother, Vera. (as of November 26, 2009)
