Injured Martinez Sanchez ousted at French Open
Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez, who won Rome three weeks ago, exits the French Open in the first round with a 6-2, 6-4 loss to Akgul Amanmuradova.
Afterwards, Martinez Sanchez told Spanish reporters she had suffered a neck injury early on.
"I warmed up well, I thought it was nothing," she said of the early discomfort. "[Then] I had to call the trainer, I could not move."
The Spaniard was not sure if she would recover in time to take part in the doubles.
After thinking about retiring from the match, Martinez Sanchez played on when Amanmuradova showed signs of nervousness. "I fought till the end, it's the most important tournament for me," she said.
