No vuvuzelas at Wimbledon

Vuvuzelas will not be allowed on the Wimbledon grounds when the event starts on Monday, tournament officials tell PA wire services.

The horns, currently in vogue because of their popularity among local spectators at the World Cup in South Africa, have also been criticized as noisy and distracting.

Large flags will also not be allowed on the grounds, officials said, and no World Cup matches will be screened on the video boards.

But the event has inevitably penetrated the tennis consciousness. On Eurosport earlier this week, commentator Simon Reed joked Victoria Azarenka's screeching was tennis' equivalent of the vuvuzela.
