Venus plays People magazine cover girl
Venus Williams graces the cover of this week's People magazine under the headline "From Health Crisis to Comeback." (Bottom-right, at right.) It's an eye-catching header that could have run just as easily for sister Serena in 2011. Younger sis did speak out about Venus to the mag after the elder Williams pulled out of a U.S. Open second-round showdown against Sabine Lisicki, saying "Life is so precious" and that Venus's health is more important than tennis.
Well, true. Still, three exhibition matches during the off-season do not constitute a "comeback." Venus has already withdrawn from the Brisbane event that will feature a field including her sister and is "questionable" for the Australian Open.
It's never good to speak too soon pertaining to a return to competitive sport. Still, here's hoping—for Venus's sake, and also for the sake of tennis. The game needs its legends—Venus, Serena, and also Kim Clijsters—to be safe and healthy and prosperous in 2012. Those four plus Petra Kvitova (of course) could make for a sensational year if all are on top of their health and form.
