Sharapova appears at ESPYs; Venus reps for her school

Maria Sharapova made a cameo on the red carpet at last night's ESPY Awards held at Los Angeles' Nokia Theatre. She then won the Best Female Tennis Player honor but was beaten for Best Female Athlete by Baylor University basketball champ Brittney Griner, and for Best Comeback by Detroit Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford. Novak Djokovic also won at the ESPYs, as Best Male Tennis Player, naturally.

It was no surprise that Sharapova looks tres chic on this occasion. Per her website: "Maria wore a J. Mendel gown from the Resort 2013 Collection, an adorned exotic Giuseppe Zanotti clutch, Jimmy Choo shoes, and a cuff and pave diamond stud earrings by Lara Bohinc." She shared a quartet of photos of her as well. Oddly, an ESPN story asking aloud who was best dressed at the event didn't even mention the WTA's No. 3 player.

That was yesterday's extracurricular buzz. In education news, it didn't go unnoticed at the recently ceased Wimbledon that Venus Williams sported an Indiana University East zip-up sweatshirt at more than one of sister Serena Williams' singles matches. Venus is taking courses online through the Midwest school and, as we all know, always looks to the future.

YOUR TURN: What do you think of Sharapova's latest styles? And do you like Venus's dress-down support of her school?
