While Roger Federer acknowledges the talent of Australia's Bernard Tomic and says that the 20- year-old usually plays well at home, the Swiss warns that Tomic shouldn’t get ahead of himself by thinking about a potential third-round Australian Open clash.
“He's also got his work cut out in the first few rounds,” Federer told reporters. “He will be making a mistake about thinking about me in the third round because he also has to get there.”
Federer also said that just because Tomic has been hot the last two weeks is no guarantee that he’ll crack the Top 10 this year.
“I think we should go step by step, see how it goes,” Federer said. “Let's speak in a year's time. Everybody wants to jump from—what's his ranking 60—to 10 in a year. It's hard to do. No. 10 is a big ask. Don't forget how tough the Top 10 players are right now.”
