Sloane Stephens jokes to TennisShorts.com that while she didn’t make a specific ranking goal to start the season, she did want to one-up fellow American Sam Querrey, who shares her USTA coach, David Nainkin.

“I just wanted to be better than Sam,” said Stephens, who is currently ranked No. 17 to Querrey’s No. 20. “I mean, that’s already accomplished. … We were like fighting for David’s attention. As long as I’m doing better than him and I’m more important, obviously then that’s all that matters.”
