Del Potro withdraws from Portugal Open; Ferrer steps in

Juan Martin del Potro has withdrawn from next week's Portugal Open with a stomach illness. World No. 4 David Ferrer, who was upset by Dmitry Tursunov in his opening match in Barcelona last week, has taken a wild card into the event and becomes the top seed.

It will be Ferrer's fourth appearance at the tournament. Stanislas Wawrinka is the second seed. Portugal's Gastao Elias and Pedro Sousa were also awarded wild cards.

France’s Marion Bartoli is the top seed on the women’s side.
