While in Buenos Aires for exhibitions against the now-retired David Nalbandian and Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal tells the media that Argentina could win the Davis Cup someday—if Juan Martín del Potro takes a leadership position. Argentina has never won the Cup and has finished as the runner-up on four different occasions.

Del Potro is battling with the Argentina Tennis Association and has said he will not play his nation’s home tie against Italy in February.

“Argentina might win the Davis Cup if (Juan Martín) del Potro takes the decision of leading the team,” Nadal said. “It is true that Argentina failed to win the tournament with two outstanding players like Nalbandian and del Potro but they hardly ever played together. However, with Nalbandian retired, del Potro must lead the team and, I am sure that the other players will follow him. If he is not in the team, the possibilities become smaller.”
