VINA DEL MAR, Chile -- Top-seeded Fabio Fognini of Italy defeated Argentina's Leonardo Mayer 6-2, 6-4 on Sunday to win the Royal Guard Open clay-court tournament.

Fognini had few problems with the unseeded Mayer, winning in 1 hour, 23 minutes. It was Fognini's third ATP Tour title -- and all of them have been on clay. Mayer was playing in his first ATP final.

It felt more like a final on Saturday, when Fognini beat Nicolas Almagro of Spain in three tough sets.

Almagro has dominated previous Latin American clay-court seasons, winning six titles on the swing through South America and Mexico. He has 12 titles overall, all on clay.
