Nieminen edges Mayer in Bucharest; Chardy loses opener

BUCHAREST, Romania -- Finnish veteran Jarkko Nieminen's first match against Leonardo Mayer of Argentina took more than two hours to win in the first round of the Nastase Tiriac Trophy on Monday.

Eighth-seeded Nieminen prevailed 6-3, 3-6, 7-6 (4) on the outdoor clay at BNR Arenas against the Vina del Mar finalist.

Also, Czech Jiri Vesely defeated Frenchman Jeremy Chardy 7-6 (3), 6-0, and Ukrainian Sergiy Stakhovsky overcame Romanian wild card Patrick Ciorcila 2-6, 6-2, 6-1.
