Caroline Wozniacki says she is happy being single and is no longer in touch with former fiancé Rory McIlroy.

Wozniacki described her reaction to McIlroy's decision to call off their engagement, telling the *New York Times*, "You start thinking what was wrong? What went wrong?”

But it has given her a better idea of what she wants from a relationship, Wozniacki added, saying, "I’m happy being single right now."

During the subsequent four months, Wozniacki has seen her play improve, winning a title in Istanbul and twice taking Serena Williams to three sets during the U.S. Open Series.

"I don’t want to have my name stuck with him forever,” she said. “I’m my own person. I have my own career."

Williams, who vacationed with Wozniacki in Miami following the French Open, is quoted by the paper as saying, "I was like, ‘How can you be so nice...’ She said, ‘I could never hate him. He’s been a big part of my life and even if I wanted to, I couldn’t hate him.’ I was really influenced by that."

However, Wozniacki said she has not had any contact with McIlroy.

“I don’t believe in holding onto someone who doesn’t want to be with you,” she said. “I definitely want someone who just wants you for who you are. I’m very upfront, I’m very honest and I’m very straightforward and I think some people get intimidated by that. I’m not saying Rory did."

She paused, then saying, “In general, a lot of people do, and if I’m in a relationship that’s strong, I’m the person I am and that’s exactly what you get."

With McIlroy reportedly telling her his decision in a phone call, Wozniacki emphasized the importance of communication.

“It’s important in relationships to talk,” she said. “If there’s a problem, you talk about it. That’s normal. Obviously, I didn’t have that chance. At the end of the day, I couldn’t have done anything different. I couldn’t have done anything more. I gave everything I had. And if that’s not enough, that’s fine. I’ll find someone who will."
