Ashleigh Barty has decided to take a break from tennis at the age of 18, but has not explained the reason behind the move.

"Since returning from the U.S. Open my team and I have decided that right now it is best for me to take a break from professional tennis]," Barty [said in a statement.

"Obviously this has been a very difficult decision with the Australian summer coming up," said the Australian prospect, adding that it is right decision for her.

She has dropped to No. 217 in singles, having reached a high of No. 129 a year ago, when she also partnered Casey Dellacqua in reaching three Grand Slam doubles finals.

"I've enjoyed some incredible experiences on the tennis tour and would like to thank my coach, Jason, and the team at TA for all of its hard work and support," she said.

"All of us in the tennis family fully support Ash's decision to take a break from professional tennis," said Australian Open tournament director Craig Tiley.

The 18-year-old was also a junior Grand Slam singles champion.
