Returning from a foot injury that had sidelined him since Wimbledon, Spain's Nicolas Almagro has withdrawn from Doha and is in doubt for the Australian Open.

The 29-year-old played his first exhibition match against Stanislas Wawrinka in Abu Dhabi and did not see himself ready to compete at the ATP event in Doha, despite defeating compatriot Feliciano Lopez in his second exhibition contest.

Now ranked No. 71, Almagro has not won a match since defeating Rafael Nadal in Barcelona and undergoing surgery six months ago. But the time off did allow him to decide what he wants to do in retirement.

"I want to play golf after my career and have been learning to play... It’s another sport and I want to learn," he told *Gulf News*, adding that he had even gone so far as to buy a golf course. "I had a lot of time to think and I did it.”
