Sylvain Bruneau, Canada’s Fed Cup captain, says he hopes Genie Bouchard will play against Romania in a playoff tie to be held in Canada from April 18-19.

“It would be very beneficial to have Eugenie there. I can’t lie,” Bruneau said to Yahoo Canada.

The world No. 7 decided not to play against the Czech Republic last weekend in Quebec; Canada was shut out in the first-round tie, 4-0. Canada must now defeat Romania to remain in the World Group. Behind world No. 3 Simona Halep, Irina-Camelia Begu, and Monica Niculescu, Romania defeated Spain to advance to the playoff tie.

“Obviously I hope that Eugenie will be part of the team,” Bruneau said. “Besides the Olympics [eligibility rules], I know she likes playing Fed Cup. [In Australia], we didn’t get that far. All the conversations I had with Eugenie, her agent, or her coach or whoever, were just regarding the tie that we just played last weekend. We never went further than that.”
