Marin Cilic has not played this season, but the U.S. Open champion was named to Croatia's Davis Cup team, which will play Serbia on the road, March 6-8 in Kraljevo.

Croat Ivo Karlovic, who won Delray Beach last week, has decided not to play this first-round tie. World No. 1 Novak Djokovic is on the Serbian team.

After winning his first major in Flushing Meadows, Cilic played Davis Cup for Croatia in a win over the Netherlands, then played tournaments in Beijing, Shanghai, and Moscow. He won the title in Moscow, but pulled out of Valencia and the Paris Masters due arm and shoulder injuries. Returning for the ATP World Tour Finals in London, Cilic didn’t win any of his round-robin matches. He was hoping to play the Australian Open and Zagreb, but said he wasn’t ready.

Croatian Davis Cup captain Zeljko Krajan isn’t sure how well Cilic can play. "We know the situation with Marin’s injury, but we still hope that he could help the team in Kraljevo,” Krajan told the AFP.

The other three players on the Croatian team are 18-year-old Borna Coric, Mate Delic, and Marin Draganja. The Serbian Davis Cup players alongside Djokovic are Viktor Troicki, Filip Krajinovic, and Nenad Zimonjic. The last time Serbia played against Croatia was in 2010; the Serbians won 4-1, with Djokovic winning singles matches over Ivan Ljubicic and Cilic.

A few days ago, Djokovic was unsure whether Cilic would be able to play, but said that he’s pleased they will play each other.

"It will help promote tennis in Serbia and it's only the second time I will play a Davis Cup match outside Belgrade,” Djokovic told Reuters. “We have to beware of the young Borna Coric who reminds me of my younger self and has a very bright future.”
