The new German captain, Michael Kohlmann, said his team was thoroughly outplayed in Frankfurt, losing to France 3-0 in the first round Davis Cup tie.

On Saturday, France’s Nicolas Mahut and Julien Benneteau easily beat Benjamin Becker and Andre Begemann in straight sets. "Today I have to admit that the French team was much better in all aspects—service return, volley, team play," Kohlmann told the DavisCup website. "We lost 3-0 and the score says it all."

French captain Arnaud Clement added that Mahut and Benneteau were almost perfect. "It was a perfect doubles for our team. Tennis matches, especially doubles matches can turn very quickly, and they stayed focused until the last point and [I’m] very proud of them."

Last year, France lost in the final at home to the Swiss. They next play Great Britain in the quarterfinals.
