Russian Ekaterina Makarova says she wants to rest more this season and decided not to play the Fed Cup semifinal at home against Germany next week. Russia will face Germany on clay at Sochi, with Maria Sharapova, Svetlana Kuznetsova, Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova and Elena Vesnina named to the team. Germany's team consists of Andrea Petkovic, Angelique Kerber, Sabine Lisicki and Julia Goerges.

"Anastasia, she took Maria, Svetlana and Elena," Makarova said in her press conference in Charleston, where she withdrew with stomach pain. "So before we were talking, and she was trying to let me a little bit rest for this year because I played everything last two years. And she has a great team. So this time, yeah, I'm not playing."

The Russians wanted to make sure they would play Germany on clay because Sharapova and Kuznetsova have both won Roland Garros. Petkovic reached the semifinals in Paris last year.

Makarova, ranked No. 8, also did not play in the first round against Poland, when Sharapova led the team to a fairly easy win. Last year, Makarova played in both Fed Cup ties, winning both her matches against Argentina and Slovakia.

Makarova not playing creates an opening in both singles and doubles for Russia, since she and Vesnina are one of the top doubles teams. Myskina has not decided who will play the doubles if they go to the fifth rubber.
