TIGER BEAT Roger Federer spoke to the present career travails of his Gillette and Nike mate Tiger Woods in an interview with The New York Times's Christopher Clarey: "It’s not what you like to see. But at the same time, I think it’s a very interesting period of his career. I always thought golf was unbelievably mental. It’s easy as an athlete when you are winning and things are going good. It’s very easy to be positive and all that. The real test comes at times like this. I definitely think he’s had also tougher moments, but he overcame those knowing that he will win again and again, and he did." Says here Fed could just as easily have been speaking about friendly rival Rafael Nadal, himself stomaching some woeful results this season, relatively speaking.

CLOTHES ENCOUNTERS  It seems unfathomable that in the year 2015 a professional tennis player could arrive at a tournament to play but find his gear missing due to an airline flap. But that's just what befell Jiri Vesely when he got to Casablance this past week, and as a result, he got to sport a flashy set of shorts. (Your loyal Spin keeper nearly wishes it had been a Grand Slam event week, so as to let Vesely have it, in good-natured style, in our Fashion Aces and Faults rundown.) The No. 49-ranked Vesely notched a nifty win over Mikhail Youzhny before falling in the semifinal round in Morocco to Daniel Gimeno-Traver in a tough one, 6-7 (3), 6-4, 6-4. Lotto good it will do him: His sponsoring clothier promises that a new set of threads awaits him in Monte-Carlo when he gets there for next week's Rolex Masters.

BLAKE POINT  Want to see how a (retired) pro lives? James Blake is letting go of a troika of homes from Santa Monica, California, to Westport, Connecticut. The images are sleek and flawless, kind of like the homeowner's forehand.
