Stanislas Wawrinka said his win against Rafael Nadal in the Rome quarterfinals could mark a turnaround for him. The Swiss had not gone further than the third round of a tournament since his title win in Rotterdam, falling to No 9 in the ranking.

"I needed to again find my confidence, and this match is perfect for that," he said following a two-set win against Nadal, adding that finding his form was "just a question of attitude."

Wawrinka withstood four set points in the opening set and won the second in straightforward fashion.

"It was important for me, it has been some weeks since I played well," he said.
