You can buy them, you can win them over or you can do something nefarious or notorious so as to attain them. There's certainly more than one way to score new Twitter followers. The 2015 French Open men's singles winner, Stan Wawrinka, revealed Friday his plot to top the cool half-million follows mark by week's end. His ammo: giving away some of his prized printed shorts to a "lucky" follower.

The Swiss, up to No. 4 in the ATP World Tour rankings after his French Open victories, had 453,000-plus Twitter followers as of Friday morning. At press time, that number stood at more than 475,000.

Wawrinka's shorts became an instant hit as he progressed through the draw at Roland Garros, ultimately trouncing Novak Djokovic in the final. Not since Venus Williams' red-and-black can-can dress has court fashion been so talked about in Paris.  To his credit, Wawrinka proved to be entirely in on the joke, draping the shorts over his press-conference podium upon winning his second major title.

Now he's going a step further. What's next, Serena Williams surrendering a carbon-copy of her patented catsuit? Roger Federer raffling off one of his pristine Wimbledon-white sport coats? Maria Sharapova donating her black frock inspired by Audrey Hepburn, or that "atomic red" number replete with Swarovski crystals?  The possibilities are endless.
