Australian Davis Cup captain Wally Masur says there's no issues with 20-year-old Nick Kyrgios heading into his country's quarterfinal tie against Kazakhstan. Kyrgios has been criticized for his behavior and incurred several fines at Wimbledon, but Masur said his player goes all out.

“Nick a liability for the Davis Cup? Absolutely not,” Masur said to AAP. “He’s here. He’s got the green and gold on. He’s one hell of a tennis player. That doesn’t make him a liability, it actually makes him the spearhead.”

The 20-year-old was training and playing basketball on Tuesday in Darwin as the team prepares for its tie, which will be played on grass courts. The world No. 41 has said that he prefers basketball to tennis, but he has never said that he dislikes tennis.

“He’s fine,” said Masur. “He played over three hours of tennis yesterday. He played a bit of basketball this morning. He’s got an opportunity to get on that match court tomorrow. No dramas there.”

Kyrgios will play singles, with Thanasi Kokkinakis and Sam Groth as other possible singles players. Lleyton Hewitt will play doubles.

Kyrgios has been hurt multiple times over the past two years, but has played all three Grand Slams this season, reaching the quarterfinals at the Australian Open, the third round at Roland Garros and the fourth round at Wimbledon.

Another Aussie, Bernard Tomic, has been suspended by Tennis Australia for this week's tie after a press conference rant about the governing body at Wimbledon.
