YESTERDAY (July 24)

SPRINGFIELD LASERS d. Philadelphia Freedoms 21-18

The Freedoms were looking to cement their place as the No. 2 team in the East, but have a little more work to do now, thanks to top American John Isner and the Springfield Lasers. Losing two of the first three sets, Philadelphia came out strong after halftime as Abigail Spears and Taylor Townsend took out Alison Riske and Anna-Lena Gronefeld in mixed doubles. With the match coming down to a final set of men’s singles, Isner laid down the hammer with a bunch of big serves against Robby Ginepri to end the match and put Springfield within spitting distance of the Western Conference’s Top 3.

Washington Kastles d. AUSTIN ACES 22-14

With the help of Swiss Miss Martina Hingis, the Washington Kastles clinched their spot in the Eastern Conference Championship and earned some long-awaited revenge against the Austin Aces, who lost their second straight match -- after winning their first eight -- on Friday night. Though Nicole Gibbs was able to put the Aces in a solid state after taking out Anastasia Rodionova in women’s singles, Teymuraz Gabashvili wasn’t able to summon his best against Sam Querrey in men’s singles, dropping serve late in the final set to hand the advantage to Washington.
