Within hours of Lleyton Hewitt's last match, Bernard Tomic was representing the next generation of Australian players in the men's draw.
The No. 16-seeded Tomic had a 6-4, 6-2, 6-7 (5), 7-5 win over Simone Bolelli on Margaret Court Arena to reach the third round.
Hewitt lost to No. 8 David Ferrer earlier on Rod Laver Arena, ending his 20th attempt to win the Australian Open. He'll retire after the tournament.
There was a video tribute featuring messages from the likes of Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Andy Murray. And the tributes kept streaming in.
''Congrats on an amazing career LLeyton Hewitt! Your Passion and fight will always be remembered by the tennis family!!!'' two-time Australian Open champion Victoria Azarenka posted on Twitter.
Martina Navratilova wrote, ''Enjoy your `retirement' Lleyton, future Hall of Famer for sure:)''
British player Heather Watson sent a gushing message, saying ''Love you Lleyton. what a beauty on and off the court''

Lleyton Hewitt has bid farewell to the Australian Open and to his singles career as a professional tennis player.
The 34-year-old Hewitt had said he would retire at this year's tournament and his last singles match came Thursday when he lost in the second round to No. 8 David Ferrer 6-2, 6-4, 6-4.
In a battle between two gritty, combative players, Ferrer was relentless and for most of the match Hewitt was run all over the court as the vocal crowd cheered him on. He also twice received treatment from a trainer for a left thigh ailment and, true to form, berated the chair umpire late in the match.
Hewitt, a former U.S. Open and Wimbledon champion who is now ranked 308th, has already been named Australia's Davis Cup captain.
He is still in the doubles draw with Australian partner Sam Groth.

Jack Sock's disappointing results at Grand Slam tournaments continue.
The American lost in straight sets to Lukas Rosol in the second round of the Australian Open, 7-6 (6), 7-6 (5), 6-3.
Playing in his 13th major, Sock has only advanced past the third round at a Grand Slam tournament once, making the fourth round at last year's French Open.
He was one of eight American men to reach the second round in Melbourne - the most since 2008. Only two are still in the singles draw - No. 10 John Isner and No. 31 Steve Johnson.

French Open champion Stan Wawrinka has advanced to the third round of the Australian Open for the eighth consecutive year with a 6-2, 6-3, 6-4 win over Radek Stepanek.
Stepanek took a 4-2 head-to-head edge into the match, although Wawrinka has now won their last three matches.
Wawrinka won his first major at the 2014 Australian Open, beating Rafael Nadal in the final. He defeated Novak Djokovic for the 2015 Roland Garros final, the only man to beat the Serbian in a Grand Slam match last year.

Fernando Verdasco, who beat fellow Spaniard Rafael Nadal in the first round, is out of the Australian Open in the second.
The veteran lefthander was beaten 4-6, 6-3, 6-3, 7-6 (4) on Thursday by Dudi Sela of Israel.
His win over Nadal took 4 hours, 41 minutes and may have left the 32-year-old Verdasco lacking in energy for Thursday's match.
Verdasco double-faulted twice in a row in the tiebreaker to put Sela within two points of victory, then netted a backhand to end the match.
Sela will next play either Jeremy Chardy or Andrey Kuznetsov.

Milos Raonic has advanced to the third round after overcoming determined veteran Tommy Robredo 7-6 (6), 7-6 (5), 7-5. Raonic closed out the match on his third match point, breaking Robredo's serve to win with the only service break.
The strong-serving Canadian fired 24 aces, but he also made 59 unforced errors, compared to 17 for Robredo.
Wednesday's win gives Raonic a 6-0 record against Robredo, who is 33 and ranked 42nd.
The No. 13-seeded Raonic, who was a 2014 Wimbledon semifinalist, has never advanced beyond the quarterfinals in Melbourne.
Raonic warmed up for the Australian open by winning his eighth career title at Brisbane, where he beat Roger Federer in the final.

Andy Murray maintained his perfect record against Australian opponents when he defeated Sam Groth 6-0, 6-4, 6-1 Thursday, his 17th consecutive win against players from Down Under.
He also kept up his nearly perfect record of beating players at their home Grand Slam, moving to 13-1 - his only loss to a player in their home major was to Gael Monfils at the 2006 French Open.
The four-time Australian Open finalist advanced to the third round for the eighth time. He won the 2012 U.S. Open and 2013 Wimbledon.

Victoria Azarenka has quickly dispatched another opponent at Melbourne Park, defeating Danka Kovinic of Montenegro 6-1, 6-2 in just over an hour.
The two-time Australian Open champion hasn't given up more than three games in any of the 14 sets she has played this year, including her run to the title at the Brisbane International two weeks ago.
She beat Alison Van Uytvanck 6-0, 6-0 in the first round at Melbourne Park.
''I really don't count the games,'' she said after Thursday's match. ''What really works for me is to stay in the moment. It keeps me focused.''
Azarenka next plays Japan's Naomi Osaka, who has reached the third round of a Grand Slam for the first time with a win over the 18th seed, Elina Svitolina.

Third-seeded Garbine Muguruza had a 6-4, 6-2 win over Kirsten Flipkens to reach the third round of the Australian Open for the third straight year.
Muguruza, who lost last year's Wimbledon final to Serena Williams, made it to the fourth round in 2014 and 2015 at Melbourne Park. Last year, Williams beat the Venezuelan-born Spaniard in the fourth round here.
Muguruza will next play Barbora Strycova, who beat American Vania King 7-6 (5), 6-4.

John Isner is back in the third round at Melbourne Park for the fifth time in seven years following a 6-3, 7-6 (5), 7-6 (2) win over Marcel Granollers of Spain.
The 10th-seeded Isner had 20 aces and 53 winners in the match, and also won 33 of his 44 approaches to net.
He was one of eight Americans through to the second round at the Australian Open - the most since 2008. Four other Americans are playing their second-round matches on Thursday.
Isner has only been past the third round once before in Melbourne. He faces the winner of the match between Spain's Feliciano Lopez and Guido Pella of Argentina.
Isner lost to Lopez in the third round in 2012.

Ana Ivanovic has advanced to the third round at Melbourne Park following a 6-3, 6-3 win over qualifier Anastasija Sevastova in a match that was suspended when a spectator fell on the stairs at Rod Laver Arena.
Ivanovic was up a service break and leading 4-3 in the first set when medical personnel rushed to the woman's aid in the upper level of the 15,000-seat stadium. Tournament organizers said the woman was treated in the stadium before taken away on a stretcher for observation and further treatment.

Play was suspended on Rod Laver Arena early Thursday when a spectator fell on a stairwell in the upper level of the 15,000-seat stadium.
Former French Open champion Ana Ivanovic was up a service break and leading qualifier Anastasija Sevastova 4-3 in the first set of their third-round match when play was stopped to allow medical personnel to come to the aid of the spectator. No other details were immediately available.
When play resumed after a half-hour delay, Ivanovic held serve for a 5-3 lead.

Misty rain has briefly delayed the start of play on outdoor courts at the Australian Open.
Play has begun on the three main stadiums with roofs at Melbourne Park, including the opening match on Rod Laver Arena between 2008 French Open champion Ana Ivanovic and qualifier Anastasija Sevastova of Latvia.
Margaret Court Arena was hosting an all-French third-round match Thursday between Gael Monfils and Nicolas Mahut, while American John Isner, the 10th-seed player, took on Marcel Granollers of Spain at Hisense Arena.
Andy Murray was set to open night play at Margaret Court Arena against Australian Sam Groth, while Lleyton Hewitt was to play David Ferrer in what could be the Australian veteran's last match before retiring.
