There has been more controversy surrounding the Australian Davis Cup team with Bernard Tomic criticizing Nick Kyrgios for not playing. The Australians fell to the Americans in the first round.

"Two times he's done it. Two times he's faked it. While I'm here, Nick's sitting down in Canberra. Bull he's sick," Tomic was picked up saying by TV cameras while speaking to captain Lleyton Hewitt in the fourth match of the tie.

Tomic lost that key match to John Isner to hand the Americans the win, 3-1.

Kyrgios, who came to Kooyong and practiced with the team before a decision was made not to put him in the tie, did not play because of illness. He said he had picked up a virus while competing in Dubai, and had also been experiencing hip and back problems.

Though Tomic described the remark as "heat of the moment," he also said, "Obviously I would have loved him to be here, but he is obviously sick like he says he is, and for me I think just now it will be seeing if he actually plays Indian Wells because a similar situation happened last year where he didn't come to Czech and he had stress fractures and somehow played Indian Wells and felt good.

"So now it's going to be really funny for me to see the next two days whether he plays or not... If he plays in Indian Wells, he's definitely lost a little bit of my respect."

With Kyrgios sidelined, the second singles spot was taken by Sam Groth. Groth fell to Isner in the opening singles match before Tomic defeated Jack Sock to even the tie 1-1. Groth did not play doubles following day, with Lleyton Hewitt and John Peers falling to Bob and Mike Bryan in five sets.

Tomic added that he had spoken to Kyrgios, who told him he would play the Indian Wells.

"And he was like 'Yeah, I should. I'm still sick but I'm gonna be better tomorrow,'" Tomic said. "It's just disappointing to not have him here. He's an amazing player and it would have been important to have him here.''

Tomic also said that he had been playing with a wrist injury.

Kyrgios appeared to hit back on Twitter, writing that he was "not going to take it personally" but then Tweeted, "Just don't expect me to have your back anytime soon."

Hewitt defended both of his players, saying, "For me both boys did exactly what I asked them to."

"I asked Nick to come down here and prepare and give it a shot," said Hewitt, explaining that Kyrgios had been declared unfit by the medical team. "Bernie wasn't 100 percent. [He] gave absolutely 100 percent in his matches here and did everything I asked him to."
