David Goffin is crediting his appearance in the Davis Cup final with helping him get off to a positive start this season.

The Belgian reached the semifinals of a Masters event for the first time at Indian Wells, and also got to the fourth round of the Australian Open. He came into the season having led Belgium to the Davis Cup final, winning his first match before falling to Great Britain's Andy Murray in a four-setter that decided the tie.

Belgium's surprise run to the final, with wins against depleted teams from Switzerland, Canada and Argentina, was the highlight of Goffin's season—and arguably his career.

"I think sometimes when you don't have a lot of confidence ... it's always good to come back in your country with good staff, with your friends," he said. "Sometimes if you can win for your country it gives you a lot of energy, a lot of confidence to come back on the tour. Sometimes it helps a lot to play for your country and to win some matches in Davis Cup."

Goffin gave examples of players experiencing a Davis Cup effect, including Novak Djokovic's record winning streak following his 2010 Davis Cup victory and Murray's emotional reaction to his win.

"Yeah, I don't know why,” Goffin said. “Maybe for Novak and for Andy it was the same after when they [won] the Davis Cup. They play a good season.
