Svetlana Kuznetsova has no explanation for the wild swings throughout her career, but she says she plays her best when she gets on a roll.

The 30-year-old Russian has won two Grand Slams, but she also spent lengthy periods ranked below No. 30 on the WTA tour.

"My coach laughs about it,” she said. “He said, ‘You don't have the medium term. You go very bad or very good.’ I always said I feel so much better when I have two matches under my belt; two, three matches. Then I start to play better and get into the rhythm of the matches."

She has been in rhythm this week, defeating Serena Williams and Timea Bacsinszky en route to the Miami Open final. The impressive run in Key Biscayne will put her back in the Top 15.

She admitted that she lacked confidence coming into the tournament. She reached the final in Sydney to start the season, but exited in the first round of the Australian Open and dropped her opener in Indian Wells.

"I tried to work a lot,” she said. “Training every morning a lot just to get confidence back, get my fitness [back].”

Now a veteran, she has stopped setting goals for herself and is concentrating on playing up to her potential.

"I just don't want to have any [goals],” she said. “My main goal is just to keep improving. My main goal now, actually, is to come to play tournaments being ready … When you compete you got to be at the top level. That's the only goal I have."

Though she will get back into the Top 15 following Miami, Kuznetsova is not concerned about the rankings.

“I didn't think if I get to [the] Top 10 or not,” she said. “When I go and I see the rankings, I am confident in myself [that] I can beat these players, and players from [the] Top 10. I can beat basically most of the top players. Actually, any player. I go for quality, not quantity."
