Agnieszka Radwanska, who could face Serena Williams in the Wimbledon semifinals, says that Williams is still on top of the women's game.
Williams hasn’t won a major since Wimbledon last year, but she did win Rome in May. The 34-year-old lost in the final of the French Open three weeks ago to Garbine Muguruza, and lost to Angelique Kerber in the Australian Open final.
“She's still making finals. Still a lot of points, and she can be No. 1 still,” Radwanska said. ‘'Being No. 1 is not about one or two tournaments. It's whole year. She's still playing good, very deep through all the tournaments. So why not?”
Williams, a 21-time Grand Slam champion, is 10-0 against Radwanska. This year, Williams bested Radwanska at the Australian Open and Indian Wells, and has also previously knocked her out of Wimbledon.
In 2008, Radwanska reached the quarters in London, only to get beaten by Williams, 6-4, 6-0. In 2012, she reached the Wimbledon final and lost, 6-1 5-7 6-2 against Williams.
Radwanska has gone deep at Wimbledon on other occasions, reaching the semifinals in 2013 and in 2015.
The 27-year-old said that her game has improved over the years, but so have her competitors' games.
“For sure more experience than a few years ago, and, well, it's always something to improve. So when I go on court and practice, I'm trying to improve everything,” the world No. 3 said. “Tennis has changed, as well. Different opponents. Tennis is stronger and faster than before, so you always try to catch it up and be able to still win even if there is no more easy matches, as before.”
Radwanska will play Kateryna Kozlova in the first round.
