NEW YORK—The U.S. Open will use a shot clock in its junior event, a first for a sanctioned tournament.

The USTA announced that junior and college matches at the tournament will have a shot clock on the scoreboard, which will begin as the score is entered by the umpire. However, the decision to call a time violation will still be at the discretion of the umpire.

"We are not changing the rules, but we are testing the technology and getting the umpires used to it," USTA executive Stacey Allaster said in a press release.

Official International Tennis Federation rules allow 20 seconds between points, starting when the ball from the previous point is no longer in play. Grand Slam events, including junior competitions, are played under ITF rules.
