The fan who got himself a date with Eugenie Bouchard when the New England Patriots came back to win the Super Bowl says there has been a huge reaction to his impromptu exchange with the Canadian player.

John Goehrke responded to a tweet from Bouchard when the Atlanta Falcons had a 28-3 lead in the game, asking if they could go on a date if the Patriots won the game. "Sure," replied Bouchard online, with the score still very much in favor of the other team. But the Patriots completed the biggest comeback in Super Bowl history to win the game, and in the process Goehrke earned a victory of his own.

"I’ve been a big fan of hers for a couple of years now, and I was going through Twitter,” he told the Kansas City Star, deciding to take a long shot that paid off. “And it was only the second quarter when I saw her tweet.”

The 20-year-old student from the University of Missouri said he "thought there was maybe a chance she would respond," but "no chance she would actually do it.”

To his amazement, he had secured a date with a Grand Slam finalist.

Bouchard has said she will stick to her word, though she does not know when the two will meet. Speaking to TSN, the 22-year-old suggested she would offer a trip to a tennis event, with Goehrke telling the Kansas City Star that his college break coincides with the tournament in Miami.

He said the response from friends and on social media began as soon as the game finished.

"I started to get texts from friends that I knew," he said, adding that he was also deluged with messages online and from the media. “…It's been crazy.”

Bouchard is next entered to play the WTA event in Doha, which begins on Monday.
