The immediate takeaway from Bernard Tomic’s desultory, 6-2, 6-2 loss to 112th-ranked Bjorn Fratangelo in the first round of the BNP Paribas Open is something that the Aussie might be familiar with: apathy. This isn’t the first time, or even the 21st time, that we’ve seen less than Tomic’s best on the tennis court. I don’t mean that as an accusation of tanking, but rather than that Tomic, undeniably volatile but unquestionably talented, should not be hit off of a tennis court in 62 minutes by anyone.

Yet this is Tomic’s fifth consecutive defeat, and he’s sliding down the rankings fast. Currently at No. 42, he’ll be hard pressed to earn a seed at this summer’s majors. I would say that Tomic will become this year’s dangerous first-round floater for the top seeds at the Slams, but after this latest performance, we might be giving the 24-year-old too much credit.

On the other hand, let’s give credit to Fratangelo, who earned his first ATP tour victory of the season at what has effectively become the sport's fifth major. It’s not the first time Fratangelo has made waves at Indian Wells—last year, the Pittsburgh, PA product qualified for the main draw, reached the second round and took a set off of top seed Novak Djokovic. It was the only set Djokovic would lose all tournament.

"He came out with a good game plan, knowing what to do,” Djokovic said of Fratangelo last year. "I didn't know much about him."

In the year since putting a scare into Djokovic, Fratangelo has climbed 37 ranking spots from No. 149 to No. 112. He’s still relatively unknown to most players and fans, but the 23-year-old is putting himself in a position to earn main-draw qualification into this summer’s Slams.

“It answered a lot of questions I had about whether or not I was good enough to turn pro,” Fratangelo told TENNIS Magazine last year about his success against Djokovic. “That match erased any doubt.”

Judging by his results at Indian Wells over the past two years, perhaps it’s Fratangelo that the big names will want to avoid encountering.
