A day after top-seeded Stan Wawrinka was knocked out of the Miami Open, No. 2 seed Kei Nishikori joined him on the sidelines.

The world No. 4 was beaten badly in the quarterfinals on Wednesday, falling to unseeded Fabio Fognini, 6-4, 6-2, in just 67 minutes.

Nishikori, last year’s runner-up in Key Biscayne, needed three sets to get past Fernando Verdasco and Federico Delbonis before being ousted by the Italian.

Fognini is one of the unlikeliest Masters semifinalists in recent memory. With the victory, the world No. 40 became the first unseeded player in a decade to reach the Miami Open semis—qualifier Guillermo Canas was in the final four at the tournament back in 2007—and the first Italian man to do so.

The 29-year-old matched his best result at a 1000-level tournament, and improved to just 9-44 against Top 10 players in his 13-year career.

Fognini will play Rafael Nadal—who defeated Jack Sock in the night match—for a spot in the final.
