Taylor Fritz hasn’t gotten off to a great start in 2017, but the 19-year-old had an impressive showing in Indian Wells earlier this month, upsetting world No. 39 Benoit Paire and world No. 9 Marin Cilic before losing in the third round.

The 19-year-old American took another step toward turning his young season around on Wednesday night, defeating Adam Pavlasek, 6-2, 6-3, in the first round of the Miami Open. The Californian dominated from start to finish in a match that lasted just over an hour.

Fritz will play veteran Philipp Kohlschreiber in the second round.

Elsewhere in Key Biscayne, 20-year-old qualifier Jared Donaldson saved three match points in the second set to force a decider against world No. 45 Kyle Edmund. The American clinically took the third for an impressive 2-6, 7-6 (4), 6-2 comeback win. The victory was just Donaldson’s third in an ATP main draw this year. He’ll take on German Mischa Zverev for a spot in the third round.

Donald Young also had a difficult time in his opening match against Dustin Brown, but the Delray Beach and Memphis semifinalist prevailed, 6-3, 1-6, 6-2. Young will play 11th-seeded Frenchman Lucas Pouille in the second round.
