Lauren Davis continued her brilliant season on Monday with a 6-1, 6-4 victory over Julia Goerges at Indian Wells, and she won’t have to play fourth-seeded Simona Halep in the fourth round.

The 2015 champion, who came into the match just 2-3 on the season, was knocked off by 28th seed Kristina Mladenovic, 6-3, 6-3, opening the door for the 23-year-old to reach the quarterfinals.

The Frenchwoman is hardly a pushover, though. She’s won 14 of 19 matches in 2017, including a title in St. Petersburg and a final showing in Acapulco. In their lone previous meeting, at Roland Garros back in 2013, Mladenovic routed Davis, 6-0, 7-5.

Two days after saving three match points against Jelena Jankovic, Venus Williams earned a rather routine 6-4, 6-2 win over Lucie Safarova. The Australian Open finalist will play qualifier Peng Shuai in the fourth round. Shuai ousted sixth-seeded Agnieszka Radwanska, 6-4, 6-4.

In men’s action, Dominic Thiem rolled past Mischa Zverev, 6-1, 6-4, and third-seeded Stan Wawrinka had little trouble with Philipp Kohlschreiber, topping the German veteran in straights.

Tomas Berdych had the most crushing defeat of the day. Up a set and 5-2, the Czech took his foot of the gas and let Yoshihito Nishioka steal the second. The 70th-ranked Japanese player completed the stunning comeback, 1-6, 7-5 (5), 6-4, to set up a fourth-round match against Wawrinka.
