Ranked No. 119 in the world, Nicole Gibbs will need to navigate her way through qualifying to crack the main draw at Roland Garros this May. The task was made even more difficult for the American when, in an exclusive update to Tennis Channel, Gibbs announced that she would be temporarily stepping away from the tour to rehab a lingering injury.

"I've decided with my coach and my doctor that I'm going to be pulling out of my next couple of events and taking a few weeks off tennis to make sure that my body is in top condition for the remainder of the season,” said Gibbs, a focus of Tennis Channel’s “My Tennis Life” digital series.

"The goal right now is to be back a few weeks before Paris. One or two weeks before Paris to prep for the French Open."

Gibbs fell in the first round of the French Open in 2016 to Heather Watson, 6-2 in the third, and is not defending significant ranking points during the clay-court season. Still, this is a setback for the 24-year-old who cracked the Top 75 by the tail end of last year and reached the third round of this year's Australian Open, where she lost to Serena Williams.

Sam Groth and Nicole Gibbs are giving fans a behind-the-scenes look at the world of professional tennis all year long in My Tennis Life. To read more updates from Sam and Nicole, go to TennisChannel.com.
