Petra Kvitova says she is determined to return to tennis after a knife attack that left her hand badly damaged.

Kvitova was successful in fending off the attacker, according to officials, but had to undergo surgery on her left hand and has not played since the offseason incident. Writing on social media, she said she does not have a return date but wants to make a comeback.

"I still can't tell you when I will be back,” she wrote, ”but I can tell you that tennis is a huge motivation for me, and I realized while I've been away how much I like challenges.”

The two-time Grand Slam champion, 27, added that she is "doing everything" to pick up her playing career again.

According to a spokesperson for the Czech Tennis Federation, the left-handed Kvitova has begun to use her hand for basic tasks, and there does not appear to have been permanent damage. That is a more positive assessment than a few weeks ago, when her manager suggested the injury was more severe than anticipated.

Fellow WTA players who have been in touch with the popular Czech, like Karolina Pliskova, have also said she has a positive attitude and wants to return.
