The intensive offseason training done by players can contribute to injuries at the beginning of the season, according to an expert.

"The issue is the squeeze on the offseason, followed by intense training to get ready for extreme conditions at the Australian Open,” Isokinetic Medical Group’s Michael Davison told *The Telegraph*. “This acute spike in workload puts them at risk. Other factors are previous injury, cumulative fatigue, workload and poor communication with coaches and the medical team."

"Playing on three different surfaces" also increases the potential for injuries during the season, he added.

Both No. 1 Andy Murray and No. 2 Novak Djokovic withdrew from Miami with injuries, as did WTA No. 1 Serena Williams. Simona Halep, Garbine Muguruza, Milos Raonic and Kei Nishikori are among the players who have also reinjured themselves coming off the offseason.

Raonic also withdrew from Miami with an ongoing hamstring injury.
