A day after knocking off third-seeded Venus Williams at the Volvo Car Open in Charleston, Laura Siegemund continued her strong week with a convincing 6-2, 6-3 win over 15th seed Lucie Safarova.

The German saved two match points in her thrilling 6-4, 6-7 (3), 7-5 upset of Williams, but her match on Thursday was far less uneventful and dramatic—and Siegemund was perfectly fine with that.

With a mix of powerful ground strokes and delicate drop shots, the world No. 37 kept the former French Open finalist off balance from the first ball to the last.

“Throughout my matches here I did a great job in the big points,”  told the Tennis Channel after her straight-sets win. “And I think that’s a huge part of my game, that I’m just strong in important points. I try to focus on that a lot because there were actually a lot of games that were 30-all, where maybe the match can turn around.

"If she’s playing a little better [and] I’m playing a little defensive, it could turn around. I was trying very hard to stay focused, also dare a little more in the important points and invest to try to play better and better.”

Siegemund will need to continue winning critical points against her quarterfinal opponent, eighth-seeded Anastasija Sevastova. Sevastova beat Ons Jabeur, 7-5, 7-6 (6), in the third round.
